The Town of Newmarket is inviting the community to a special celebration as we mark the 60th anniversary of the Canadian Flag, a symbol of unity, pride and Canadian values.
"I am so proud to see how this community continually comes together to demonstrate support, pride and strength, especially during times of uncertainty,” says Newmarket Mayor John Taylor. “Now more than ever is a time to celebrate what it means to be Canadian and show our strong support for our homegrown products and businesses by shopping Canadian!”
The birthday celebration on February 15 will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. at Newmarket Riverwalk Commons, 200 Doug Duncan Drive and will feature a live DJ with an exclusively Canadian playlist, Canadian-themed roaming characters and buskers, complimentary birthday cake, hot chocolate, maple taffy and mini-Canadian flags (all while quantities last), and a Canadian-themed photo wall.
Event details:
1:30 to1:45 p.m. National anthem, Mayor Taylor’s remarks and birthday cake (while quantities last)
1:45 to 2 p.m. and 2:30 to 2:45 live Canadian themed busker performances
Before and after the celebration, don’t forget to visit Newmarket’s Main Street and Choose Local by shopping and dining at an eclectic mix of shops and restaurants.
To further show the community’s pride for our true north strong and free, the Town will hang the Canadian flags along Main Street, and the flag will be painted on the ice at Riverwalk Commons.
The Town of Newmarket is encouraging the community and local businesses to show their Canadian pride by hanging Canadian flags, decorating in red and white, lending a helping hand to friends and neighbours and sharing your stories about why you are proud to be Canadian on social media using the hashtag #CanadianFlag.
“Newmarket, let’s show our commitment to Canada in this difficult time. Everyone should put a Canadian flag on their house or in their window! Let’s start a trend across Canada that our Canadian Flags will fly proudly until the tariff threats end!” says Mayor John Taylor.
The National Flag of Canada debuted on February 15, 1965. Over the past six decades, the flag has become a unifying symbol of our nation.
