Accessibility at the Town of Newmarket
The Town of Newmarket is committed to creating an accessible environment by removing barriers for people of all abilities in our community. This includes Town staff, community and business partners, residents and visitors.
The Town of Newmarket website meets the current standards outlined in the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). The website conforms with the WCAG 2.0 Level AA guidelines (current standards are Level A). The website features browsealoud, a tool which adds speech and reading support to extend the reach of the website for people of all abilities. Every effort has been made to update current Town pdf documents (2014 and later) and third party documents on the website and make them fully accessible. The Town of Newmarket is pleased to provide 4 brand new wireless assisted hearing device in the Council Chamber for public use. Each wireless receiver provides configurable headsets through a 3.5mm standard headphone connection. Members of the public can bring their own headphone attachments or use the Town's inventory. Staff are able to provide a t-coil neck loop that will work with many hearing aids, a single earpiece, or headphones which covers both ears.

The Town endeavours to demonstrate leadership in the area of accessibility. The Newmarket Accessibility Advisory Committee provides comments and advice to Council and staff on ways to ensure accessibility in all Town services, facilities and programs in accordance with the requirements of the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001 (ODA), Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA) and the Ontario Human Rights Code.

Provincial Legislation
Ontario has laws that set the standards for accessibility, under the AODA. The first of these laws, which was enacted in 2008, is the Accessibility Standards for Customer Service (Ontario Regulation 429/07).
The second standard, called the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (Ontario Regulation 191/11) was enacted in 2011 and includes accessibility standards for Information and Communication, Employment, Transportation and the Design of Outdoor Public Spaces. These standards have been adopted in order to create a barrier-free and accessible Ontario by 2025 and apply province-wide.
